Leading people into a maturing new life in Jesus Christ

More Than Enough

“What are you drawing?” the teacher asks the first-grader. “A picture God” the little girl replies. “Now remember,” the adult kindly advises, “nobody knows what God looks like.” To which the child confidently responds, “Well, now they do!”

To this day I remember sitting in a first-year college Bible class as our professor directs us: “Close your eyes. I’m going to say a word and I want you to share what image comes immediately before your mind.”

“Home” he says, and I see a picture of the house our family lives in and I experience a good feeling. “Life,” and a tree appears. I feel positive. But we’re all surprised by the next word — “God.”

There’s no image in my mind. Nothing! Nor is there any feeling. I realize I don’t know who God is. I’ve thrown out what I see as just symbols, but have replaced them with nothing. Maybe I need to become like a little child?

How thankful we can all be to our God for his patience with us as we grow up into him, as we realize the ultimate importance of Jesus.

He is “the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15), “the exact imprint of his nature” (Heb 1:3). He “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Heb 1:3) and “in him all things hold together” (Col 1:17).

God, who “is spirit,” (John 4:24), is of course, also “invisible” (1 Tim 1:17) to the human senses by His very nature. So while “No one has ever seen God,” Jesus “has made him known” (John 1:18). Jesus makes this absolutely clear when he tells us, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:8).

Praises to our God who gives us a picture of “spirit” embodied in his “only” — meaning “unique, one-of-a-kind” — “Son” (John 3:16) within whom “the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (Col 2:9).

Jesus is our picture of God. This is as good as it gets. He’s more than enough. So turn your eyes on Jesus. Look fully into his wonderful face.
