Leading people into a maturing new life in Jesus Christ

Our Greatest Opportunity

Follow me. The words echo down the centuries and fade into the caverns of the church with a decreasing influence on those who profess the name of the One who speaks them.

It wasn’t always this way. When Jesus calls his first disciples they respond by leaving their nets, saying farewell to their ways of living. They adjust their lives to serve, to learn to be “fishers of men” (Matt.  4:19).

They’re never the same. But great is their reward, for they develop a deep and intimate life-changing encounter with One who is “the image of the invisible God” (Col. 1:15).

Follow me. Is this a command, an invitation, or perhaps both? One thing is certain: it’s the greatest opportunity ever given any human being. And to those who respond it’s a chance to “learn from me” (Matt. 11:29), the most influential teacher in recorded history.

Follow me. Is everyone to follow or only a select few? “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be” (John 12:26).

Every person who comes to Jesus he calls to follow him. A disciple is not a special class of Christian. Such a distinction is a distortion that often arises in the church, but never in Christ’s kingdom. While there are different functions within the body of Christ, everyone is called to follow, to apprentice their lives to Jesus.

“Make disciples of all nations,” Jesus says. “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). This includes everyone.

Follow me. This is a call to live in the kingdom, a call to an abundant life, a call to serve out of love in ever-growing commitment. It’s the life of those who “have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Col 3:10).

You and I are given one lifetime to follow and become like Jesus. It’s the greatest opportunity we’ll ever have. What is our answer?
